If everything goes
well and according to plan, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and
Communications will be the first among the nine ministries in Sarawak to get
their MS ISO 9002:1994 certification by the year 2000.
Speaking at the launching
ceremony for Ministry's project to implement the system MS ISO 9002:1994 quality
system, Datuk Haji Abdul Aziz Husain, Deputy State Secretary of Sarawak praised
the efforts made the ministry's steering committee in achieving the certification
right on target and as such, becomes one of the few government ministries/agencies/departments
to have reached this status.
The Steering Committee
which was formed in August 1998 is under the coordination of its Management
Representative and the ministry's Principal Assistant Secretary, Encik Isaka
Kana.
The procedures which
comprise one Quality manual and 17 Quality procedures were prepared and documented
under the support and guidance of MAMPU.
The Core Process of
this project is "The processing and Monitoring of new Infrastructural projects".
Despite the innitial
difficulty during the "transition" period, the staff were not discouraged
but in fact were motivated to achieve the ministry's goal for certification
via numerous briefings, workshops, training and consultations with MAMPU.
In recently passed
the Adequacy Audit on Sept. 30, 1999 and can now proceed to work towards passing
the Compliance Audit.
"We should be able
to get through the Compliance Audit by Feb 2000 and after an allowance of
2-3 months for further improvements and corrections if necessary, the Ministry
can aim for MS ISO 9002:1994 certification by May/June 2000", says Encik Isaka
Kana.
The Ministry of Infrastructural
Development and Communications is a small ministry with only 28 staff.
Established in 1963
and formerly known as the Ministry for Public Works, its main responsibility
is to propose, plan and implement Infrastructural and Communications policies
and programmes in line with the socio-economic requirements or needs of the
State.
It also assists in
coordinating and monitoring infrastructural development works by agencies
under its charge such as Public Works department (JKR), the State's port authorities
(except Bintulu Port Authority), Brooke Dockyard & Sarawak Rivers Board
to name a few.
