Government PR Practitioners Must Concentrate on Outcomes

Mr. Aloysius Dris recommends joint courses and workshops to further strengthen civil service-media relations

The seminar on "Government Practitioners as Agents of Change in Development : Toward Effective PR Practitioners-Media Relations" on November 2 1999 in Kuching brought together about 70 government Public Relations Officers, members of the press and other media practitioners for a series of paper presentations on the topic.

Organised by Angkatan Zaman Mansang (AZAM) in collaboration with the Chief Minister's Department, the one-day seminar emphasized the significant roles of government PR practitioners as agents of change for development in Sarawak and in Malaysia as a whole.

The panel of speakers composed of Mr. Felix Abishegenaden of Prestige Communications Sdn Bhd, Ms Maria Corazon Cortez of Faradale Media-M, Mr. Valentine Siva of Institute Public Relations Malaysia and Mr. Aloysius J. Dris of Sarawak Tourism Board spoke on relevant issues towards enhancing the important roles that government PR practitioners play as agents of change.

Mr.Felix emphasized that PR practitioners, to be effective development communicators, must lift their eyes above process and concentrate on outcomes.

Ms Maria explained on how the spirit of volunteerism and teamwork among the civil servants in ACTionetwork has brought success in implementing community development programmes.

She also mentioned that the project was successful because members were not compelled and that there were no vested interest among them except to learn and be involved.

Mr. Valentine Siva delved into the aspects of promoting an effective civil service, media communications and relations and effective dissemination of development information.

Mr. Aloysius Dris shared his thoughts and experiences on effective civil service-media relations in the dissemination of development information and presented recommendations to further strengthen the present relations between the two parties.

After the paper presentations, the participants formed smaller groups for discussions, and later the group chairpersons presented their outputs.
"Lift your eyes above process and concerntrate on outcomes" says Mr. Felix Abishegenaden

The seminar ended with a Closing Remarks from Datu Abdul Rashid Haji Aziz, Chief Executive Officer of AZAM and with the presentation of certificates to the participants.
