Though they make have retired
from their service with the government, their contribution to the service will
never be forgotten.
In appreciation of their
untiring service during their tenure of office, the State Secretary, YB Tan
Sri Datuk Amar Haji Hamid Bugo feted about 8 former heads of department to an
appreciation dinner on 12 October 1999.
The eight are Tuan Hj. Ahmad
Shafiee Hj. Yaman, formerly the Directors of RTM Sarawak; Mr, Raphael Nissom,
retired as Resident Bintulu Division; Encik Sylvester Ajah Subah, retired as
the General Manager Bintulu Development Authority; Tuan Hj. Tazuddin Hj. Junaidi,
retired as Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housing; Mr. Lim Kian Hock, retired
as Secretary, State Legislative Assembly (Dewan Undangan Negeri); Pengiran Haji
Zain Pengiran Haji Salleh, formerly the Resident, Samarahan Division; Mr. Edwin
Liew, formerly the Director of Agriculture; and Mr. Anthony Polycarp Munjan
who retired as the Director of Labour Department.
In his after-dinner speech,
Tan Sri Hamid remarked that there is a noticeable difference to today's retirees
compared to the olden days.
He noticed that retirees
nowadays seem to be far more diligent in managing their time. He considered
this as being a form of 'paradigm shift' in their ways of life.
He urged retirees to look
back during their times with their departments to see what are the areas that
can be improved upon.
They may be able to spot
some weaknesses which they might not have been able to see when they were in
the service.
It may be easier for them
to do so now since the are relatively free from the restrictions that they faced
when they were "in".
Now that they are"out",
perhaps their critical observations might be useful for the service and TanSri
Hamid gave the assurance that any constructive suggestions that they can come
up with will be most welcomed.
He added that it will be
wasteful if the knowledge gained by these retirees is not put to good use in
building more improved Civil Service.
Speaking on behalf of the
retirees, Pengiran Haji Zain responded that though they are now retired, they
will not hesitate to "look in" at the Civil Service and contribute ideas and
thoughts on ways to improve the Public Service of which they were once a part
of. Present at the dinner were heads of departments and their wives.
The dinner ended with Tan
Sri Hamid presenting some mementoes to the retirees.
