At the confluence
of Sungai Julai and Sungai Kanowit lies the town of Julau, the adminstrative
town of one of the five districts which make up Sarikei Division of Sarawak.
The other four districts are Sarikei, Meradong, Matu and Daro.
Encik
Barnabas Sato Nuek, the District Officer of Julau has been administering
the district, including the sub-district of Pakan since 1995. (Pakan is approximately
25 - 30 km south-west of Julau is under the administration of an SAO, Encik
Raymond Pey Adun).
With a total
land area of about 2, 630sq. km (1,015 sq. miles), Julau and Pakan are mainly
an agriculture district. The majority of the population of about 35,000 is
Iban with a few Chinese shopowners and pepper farmers. Among the government
departments and agencies in Julau are JKR, Pos Malaysia, Polis Diraja Malaysia,
Jabatan Pendidikan, RELA, KEMAS and the District Council.
"The rate
of development in Julau needs to be accelerated," explained Encik Barnabas
when RAKAN Sarawak met up with him at his office in Julau recently. "We have
put up a proposal for the development of Julau and Pakan district to the respective
authority and are expecting to hear from them in the not too distant future."
There are
many areas to look into, not least, the development projects which are formulated
to benefit the people of Julau and Pakan. "The other equally, if not the most
important aspect of development in the district," added Encik Barnabas, "is
the improvement and upgrading of roads, both main and feeder roads which serves
the longhouse population scattered over the district."
