Employee Orientationn Programme...Is It Important?

Investing in well designed staff orientation programme can pay back big dividends in staff retention, employee commitment and customers statisfaction.

Staff members who are properly trained and welcome at the beginning of their careers feel good about their choices of employer, fit in quickly with peers and colleagues and readily contribute new ideas.

Your orientation programme should accmplish seven major objectives:

1. Create comfort and rapport
    - new staff want to feel a sense of acceptance and belonging inside the organisation. Accelerate this by creating opportunities fo new staff to interact with their peers, bosses, subordinates, colleagues from other departments, customers, suppliers and senior managers.

2. Introduce the company culture
    - new staff usually want to fit in with accepted norms and values. Extend your positive influence beyond the formal presentations.

3. Show "The Big Picture"
    - Help new staff find quality answer to the following questions :

  • Where has this organisation been?
  • Where is it today?
  • Where are we heading to?
  • Where are our customers?
  • What do they say about us?
  • Who are our major competitors?
  • What is our market position?
  • What is our current focus?
4. Explain job responsibility and rewards
    - Ensure new staff are thoroughly versed on their job responsibility. Show new staff a copy of actual appraisal form and illustrate how good performance will be assesed, measured and rewarded.

5. Handle administrative matters
    - There is always be administrative matters to be completed. Try to spread those administrative matters in many short sessions in the first few weeks.

6. Provide reality checks
    - Take time to be open about the presure and realities of your organisation, your team, your customer and your competition.

7. Gain full participation
    - Give everyone a role to play in new employee orientation. Involve peers and colleagues in your mentor scheme, engage managers in talk etc.
