Online Publisher:          Contents provided by:	Recent Developments Vandalism On 14 August 1998, as part of the Kuching City Festival, an exhibition depicting the Healthy City Kuching was declared open by the State Secretary, YB Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Hamid Bugo. 23 departments and agencies took part in the four day exhibition. Tan Sri Hamid remarked that "Agencies and local councils are working hard to keep the city as clean as possible and much taxpayers' money had been spent for such a purpose." he therefore urged the public to co-operate with these local authorities. However he was saddened to note that "many public utilities were vandalised and rivers polluted because of irresponsible acts or pure ignorance on the part of the public." To circumvent such an attitude, a "two-way approach of enforcement and education should be adopted." Quality of Life Mayor Chan Seng Khai of the Council of Kuching City South reminded the public that the "development of a city cannot be judged solely from the addtion of hig-rise buildings or physical improvements. The mental development and upgrading the quality of life of the people are of equal importance. We must all work harder to maintain a high standard of hygiene in order to maintain our status as one of the Healthy Cities in Asia." (Officiating at a concert of Traditional Orchestra and Songs in conjunction with the Kuching City Festival in August, 1998) People's participation The Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Planning and Resource Management, YB Awang Tengah Ali Hassan called upon thepeople to help build a healthy city. "City folks should shed their negative attitude and work together with the government to attain the objective of growing a healthy and harmonious city. The city of future must be liveable, harmonious, peaceful, clean, well-cultured and green besides having sustainability, viability, conviviality and equal opportunity for all its citizen."
