Online Publisher:          Contents provided by:	MALAYSIA WOMEN'S DAY 25 AUGUST 1998 Woman - Who art thou? I am her. I am many things. Women of today have many roles in life. She is a mother, teacher, partner, leader, advocator, volunteer, wife and friend. Her contributions encompass area in medicine, healthcare, politics, academic, businesses, human rights, social welfare and the list goes on According to American history, the Women's Suffrage Movement led to the adoption of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States on 26 August 1920 which gave the right for women to vote. That event has sparked many women over these 78 years to strive for further rights, equality, protection and liberation of women around the world. In Malaysia, women have also contributed in many areas, especially in the traditional roles of taking care of the household and bringing up children. Nowdays, accomplishing these traditional roles have become balancing act for Malaysian women as they have established themselve as a workforce to be reckoned with in the world of commerce, technology, research & development, education and gorvernment sectors. However, women who chose to fulfil only their traditional roles are as important and influential because they are the nurturer and caregiver of the next generation of Malaysian leaders and entrepreneurs. A popular children song goes like this, "Mother is the best in the world. A mother's child always has plentiful." Sarawak womenfolk is not different as they also contribute significantly in the household, businesses, welfare, farming, technology, health, the Sarawak government civil services, etc. They too have to balance family and career and if I may say so, they have done a good job of if ! It is Malaysia Women's Day on 25 August 1998. Let us then take the time to thank all women in Malaysia regardless of age, race and ethnic groups for their contributions in making life better for Malaysia, and of course for the men as well.
