Dr.Mahathir meets the people of Sarawak


On the last legs of his nationwide tour of the country, the Prime Minister, YAB Dato' Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad arrived in Kuching, Sarawak on 27 August 1998. His trip this time was arranged to coincide with the triennial conference of the Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu, PBB, the largest of the state Barisan Nasional component parties, which look place the 27 - 30 August 1998.

In all of his tour throughout the country, Dr.Mahathir explained to the people the economic situation the country is in and the steps being taken by the gorverment to revive the economy. He rallied the people to work closely with the gorverment as only the undivided support and loyalty of the people can determine the success or ortherwise of the gorverment's efforts in this turbulent times.

Dr.Mahathir said that the gorvernment  is embarking on a programme to revive ailing banks and companies to help them to be viable again as part of the efforts to revive the economy. In this way, they can become profitable againt and be sources of revenue to the gorvernment. He reiterated the concept of " prosper thy neighbour" as one that should be adopted in order for trade the flourish between nations.The Primer Minister also advised the people to spend less on imported goods and buy more Made-in-Malaysia goods as this will lessen the flow of our currency abroad.

Whilst on his short trip here, Dr.Mahathir and entourage was taken to see several projects around the city. These are the Sejingkat Shiplock and Barrage at Pending and site of the proposed state library complex at Petra Jaya.

The Barrage

The Sarawak River Regulation Sceme Barrage and Shiplock at Sejingkat in Pending was declare open by Dr.Mahathir on the day of his arrival. The barrage project, contructed on a turnkey basis, cost about RM150 million and was completed earlier this year. In this speech, Dr. Mahathir remarked that whatever the size of the project, they are for the people's benefit and wastage must be avoided at all cost. "Malaysians are not people who like wastage. If we want to be wasteful, we might as well build statues of our leaders...the things we do not do in this country.

Library complex

The Prime Minister visited the building site of the proposed state Library complex at Petra Jaya within the vicinity of the state mosque and the Sarawak Stadium. Costing around RM54 million, work on the 22 ha project commenced in August 1996 and is schedule for completion at the end of 1999. When completed, the complex will house state-of-art multi media capability, an auditorium which can accommodate 300 people, bookshops, connference and training rooms, cafteria, a creche and an administrative block.
