STATE IT SOFTWARE UPGRADE

In today's rapid flow of information and speedy communication, it is heartening to note that the Sarawak government is boosting its software infrastructure by upgrading its existing IT software.This is in line with the government's avowed policy of transforming the state Civil Service to serve the public in a more effective and efficient manner.

SAINS or Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd, the wholly-owned subsidiary company of  the Sarawak government entrusted with the responsibility of managing the state government's IT programme, signed and agreement with Lotus Sales and Services Sdn Bhd on 16/12/97 for a new software package.

The package which costs around RM 200,000 includes the purchase of 450 unit of personal computers, the installation of Lotus SmartSuites '97, Lotus Messaging Switch and Lotus Domino Notes. The introduction of this new line of software is to supplement the existing goverment intranet including tne electronic mail software. This co-existence strategy was one of the recommendations made by the State Information Technology Architecture Committee, chaired by the Deputy State for Humas Resource, Datuk Haji Abdul Aziz Hussain. The Committee is responsible for setting the state government's technical IT direction and agendas.

The statewide coverage is expected to further improve the productivity and foster communication rapport between government agencies and departments in Sarawak. Mr. Teo Tien Hong, the General Manager of SAINS initialled the agreement on behalf of the state government whilst Lotus Sales and Services was represented by its General Manager, Mr. Peter Goh. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Datuk Haji Abdul Aziz Hussain.
