Flash Floods Will be a Thing of the Past in Sri Aman

Construction of Taman Padri - Taman Sri Gamang - Sg. Undup Earth drains. The contract involved the excavation of 3.7 km of earth drain to provide an outlet for two housing estates, which are facing serious drainage problem. The project was started in the mid-1998 and completed by year end. Contract cost was around RM180,000
When it rains, it pours down buckets of water. That is the climatic characteristics of our tropical monsoon weather.

Like it or not, Malaysians have gotten used to their weather. But, can the drains cope with such a sudden gush of water!

When the rain comes, blocked drains are a familiar sight every-where around us.

The reason is that water outlets are poorly constructed thus giving rise to blockages especially around housing estates and also near and around construction sites.

But slowly this avoidable "freak" of man's engineering folly is being addressed and the situation is improving albeit at a less than hurried pace.

Sri Aman is no exception. There, the Drainage & Irrigation Department, DID is carrying out extensive urban drainage project in and around Bandar Sri Aman.

"In view of the rapid urban development in our country, drainage problems and flash flooding have become more prevalent in the town," says Ir. Chok Moi Soon of the DID.

Construction of drainage improvement works at Sg Stawang. This contract involved the construction of concrete drain from Jalan Bayu to Sg Stawang and into Btg Lupar. The main components are 1104 metres of concrete drains, 3 no. culverts and one triple 6' x 6' tidal control gates. The contract sum is RM3.04 million. The project is 75% complete. Construction of drainage improvement works at Sg Simanggang. The contact involves the improvement of a section of Sg Simanggang (180m), a twin box culvert incorporating flap gates at the river mouth. The contract sum is RM735,000. 78% of the project is completed.

"Under capacity or the small size of the drains and in some cases, rivers are the major contributing factor of this flooding problem whenever it rains, and in some areas, the problem is compounded by tidal effects," added Ir. Chok.

Being a department tasked to solve and mitigate urban drainage problem, the DID's objective is to improve the drainage system in urban areas through proper planning thus ensuring a healthier and cleaner urban environment for its dwellers.

"Structural measures to improve the drainage capacity include channelisation, widening, deepen-ing and lining of these trunk drains," added Ir. Chok. These efforts are being continuously intensified.
