"If there is going to be a genuine information revolution, it has to take place in our rural communities as well as in the urban societies" said Datuk Haji Abdul Aziz Haji Husain as he officiated at the Opening Ceremony of the e-Rur@l Symposium centering on the theme Rural Development with Information and Communication Technologies held in Kuching recently. Datuk Aziz added that there exists an unequal distribution of the benefits of a wired society and many sections of society are being left behind by the advances in Information and Communication Techno-logies (ICTs). He called on the participants to make the symposium an opportunity to compare and share experiences not only for the benefit of the practitioners but more importantly for the intended beneficiaries in the rural communities like Bario in Sarawak. Research shows that there is no monopoly of wisdom any where for achieving sustainable human development with ICTs in poor rural communities. It is on this premise that the organisers gathered a number of projects that have been implemented which focused on addresssing the digital divide in the rural communities in developing countries. The symposium, organised by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) in conjunction with AZAM, MIMOS and International Development Research Centre (Canada) gathered participants from West Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak as well as from India, Mongolia, Philippines and China.
