RUBBISH BAG CAMPAIGN FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT

"Over to you," says Datuk Bandar Awang Ehsan to a bus driver, witnessed by Datuk Amar Dr Sulaiman and Datuk Abang Johari. Cus users must use the bin to dispose litter.
"In order to encourage more visitors to our land, we must clean up our towns and cities so that visitors who come here will want to come back. Not only will they be back a second time but they will bring in more of their friends to visit us. That will add in more revenue to the country's purse".

This is the message put across by the newly-appointed Sarawak's Minister of Tourism, Datuk Abang Johari Tun Openg. He was speaking to an audience consisting of public transport operators, vigilante groups and civil servants on Saturday, 30.9.00 at Padang Pasir near the Divisional Mosque in Kuching.

The occasion was the launching of Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara's "Cleanliness and Vehicle Rubbish Bag" campaign for public transport operators including buses, lorries, hire cars and the general motorists. "Accumulated litter on roads and in drains are an unwelcome sight be it in towns or villages. A dirty environment reflects on the inhabitants of an area. What we need is for a foreign visitor to go back and tell his friends and neighbours how clean and healthy our place looks like."

Keeping our surroundings clean and litter-free is the responsibility of each and every one of us. The older generation must set a good example for the youngsters to follow. A cleaner environment contribute to a healthy mind and body for a fitter generation. Together we can make Kuching a cleaner city to live in.

Present to witness the launching and distribution of the rubbish bags to the motorists and representatives of the public transport associations the Datuk Bandar DBKU and Datuk Dr. Sulaiman Haji Daud, the MP for Petra Jaya. Light refreshments were offered after the launching of the campaign.
