Kuching Court Complex - A Majestic Aspiration

A symbol of justice. The complex was officially opened on October 6, 2000.
Backlog and delayed cases will be greatly reduced with the completion of the new Kuching Court Complex recently.

A majestic 'symbol of our aspiration" as our Chief Minister described it, the two-storey building which is strategically located near Wisma Bapa Malaysia and the State Legislative Assembly in Petra Jaya will add to the list of new and fascinating landmarks of the city.

Designed to serve the people more efficiently, the new complex is equipped with one federal courtroom, four high court and sessions court rooms respectively as well as eight magistrate's courtrooms. Compared to its previous location, parking problems will be a thing of the past. Built at an estimated cost of RM31 million, the new complex is declared as the biggest courthouse in Sarawak and one of the biggest in the country.

In his opening speech during the official launching of the new courthouse complex Sarawak Yang Di Pertua Negeri Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce said that the building of the new courthouse "is reflective of the government's continuous effort to increase the standard of public service for the people. The process of judicial administration in the State will be greatly expedited," he added.

YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud reiterated the governor's thoughts by adding that the new complex represented the people's aspiration and hopes which will put "us onto a higher plane". "Our future development is dependent on how we live our present life and if there is no respect for the law, the quality of our life will definitely suffer. Law and order are crucial to preserve peace in the country. Without peace there will be chaos and we all know what chaos can do to our economy", he explained.

He also revealed the government's future plans to build five more new courthouses throughout Sarawak within the 5-year period of the 8th Malaysia Plan (2001 - 2005). The new court complex in Kuching is the second to be officiated after the opening of the Miri courthouse in 1998.

Gracing the ceremony were Chief Justice, Federal Court Malaysia, Y.A.A Tun Dato Seri Mohd Eusoff Chin, High Court Judge (Sabah & Sarawak), Datuk Steve Shim Lip Kiong, YAA Tan Sri Dato Haji Lamin bin Haji Mohd Yunus, cabinet ministers, high court judges, magistrates, lawyers, head of departments and invited guests.
