"MALAM HARMONI MAKSAK"

Sarawak NAKSAK's Chairman, Datin Annie Fong leading the Chief Minister and VIP guests in cutting the anniversaty cake
"No man is an island. The close social ties that Sarawakians have been enjoying have to be strengthened further to promote greater goodwill and understanding amongst each other." This the Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud was putting across at the "Malam Harmoni MAKSAK" organised by MAKSAK Wanita on Saturday, 30 September 2000.

MAKSAK or the Sports and Welfare Council for civil servants was established in August 1971 with 16 affiliated agencies. To date, it has about 68 affiliated agencies in the state.

Datuk Patinggi Taib commended the women of Sarawak today for taking their place as equal partners in society, making a marked transition towards greater activity on their part.

He remarked that "...the transformation in society is reflected in the lives of our officers in the increasingly greater roles played by their wives."

"In the olden days, wives were more private, choosing to stay at home - now they are more active, involving themselves in various activities ranging from responsibilities at home to sports and social events." He quipped that "...this reflects the greater freedom that women are enjoying in our society today."

By organising social and welfare activities, MAKSAK Wanita is helping to establish and maintain closer ties within the community.

"Kuching today has about 400,000 people compared to about 70,000 during the time of Independence. It is not easy for us to keep in touch with our friends or to get to know new ones. The activities organised by MAKSAK Wanita contribute towards strengthening the cohesion in the community."

The need for a strong social bond and ties among Sarawakians will contribute significantly towards the government's call for a caring and healthy society.

Attending courses and awareness programmes have become part of MAKSAK's effort in elevating the socio-economic status of women in society
Datuk Patinggi Taib further added that "...we must not take for granted the social bond that we have today irrespective of our status and profession in society. Efforts must be made to strengthen it further. It is therefore very important that even though one is very successful in one's endeavour, one must continually maintain the good social bonds amongst not only family members, relatives and friends but also with fellow colleagues."

During the dinner, the Chief Minister presented certificates of appreciation to outstanding members of MAKSAK Wanita.

Besides organising sporting events, MAKSAK Wanita is also actively involved in charity works such as blood donation campaign and funding a haemodialysis machine for kidney patients in Sarawak.

A sum of RM50,000 was pledged by the state government to MAKSAK Wanita to assist in organising and funding their activities.

Present at the function were Datuk Amar Puan Sri Hajjah Laila; Sarawak's State Secretary, Datuk Haji Abdul Aziz Husain and wife; Chairman of MAKSAK Wanita Sarawak, Datin Annie Fong and State Attorney General, Datuk J C Fong
