"Commitment to serve the people is the key" says Datu Hatta

"An inspiring moment"...Datu Dr Hatta Hj Solhee receiving the award from the YAB Chief Minister
"It came as a real surprise to me as there had not been any indication that the Pegawai Contoh Pengurusan Tertinggi award would be given to any officer this year, and least of all to me " said Datu Dr. Hatta Hj Solhee, Deputy State Secretary I. He added that the recent awarding ceremony has been an inspiring moment for him as a civil servant.

Dr. Hatta joined the Sarawak State Service in 1971 upon graduation from Carleton University in Canada. Since then he had not looked back. He strongly believes that to be a good public official , one must be committed to serve the country and the people.

Although the monetary rewards may not be as attractive as in the corporate sector, what motivates him to remain in the service is the satisfaction of providing excellent service to the people and to contribute towards the development of the state.

Dr. Hatta's field of specialisation is development administration and development planning with emphasis on social development. To him, "Development administration requires civil servants to facilitate in every possible way the development process and if necessary to find ways and means to solve pro-blems and over-come possible constraints that may impede the smooth imple-mentation of projects at any level". An efficient development administrator must be willing to go out of his way to see that projects, however small, are implemented successfully for the benefit of the people.

Dr. Hatta has certainly found the civil service the right place for him. Now that he holds the post of the Deputy State Secretary I, he encourages fellow civil servants to remain committed to serve the people and to continuously upgrade their knowledge and skills to face the k-economy. Furthermore, he urges civil servants to enhance their leadership skills not only within the confines of their respective departments but also in organising outside events and activities. " Be proactive and do beyond what is expected of you", he advises civil servants.
