Kuching to Host Prestigious Australian Alumni Convention

Government servants who are Australian Universities graduates have more to look forward to than rekindling old ties and past friendships at the forthcoming Australian Universities International Alumni Convention (AUIAC) 2000.

Interesting topics on "Globalisation and a New World Order" will be presented by world-renowned speakers. Presenting the keynote address will be Malaysia's Prime Minister, YAB Dato" Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Also in the line up are Sarawak Chief Minister, YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri ( Dr) Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, Sarawak Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, YB Dato" Haji Adenan bin Haji Satem , Former Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tan Sri Dato Musa Hitam, YBhg Dato Yong Poh Kon, Professor DiRaja Ungku Abdul Aziz bin Ungku Abdul Hamid and YBhg Dato Micheal Yeoh.

A total of 24 speakers from Australia, United Kingdom, United States of America, New Zealand and Malaysia have confirmed their participation in the Convention. World distinguished personalities and established professionals in their respective fields, the speakers will be presenting various topics on globalisation issues related to the areas of technology, economics and business, education, governance and government and geo-politics.

Among the famous names to speak will be the Honourable Alexander Downer, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Richard Neville, author/futurist and accomplished Australian acade-micians.

Speakers from New Zealand, United Kingdom and USA are Dr. David R. Given of Lincoln University, Dr Elizabeth Bennet, His Excellency Mr Peter Varghese, Mr. Pete Peterson, US Ambassador to Vietnam and Professor Alastair Davidson of Princeton University.

Senior government officials and their respective agencies and departments are helping to ensure a very successful convention. The Public Works Department, the Protocol Department, the Chief Minister's Department and the Sarawak Tourism Board are just some of the government agencies roped in to assist in the organising of the event.

The convention is organised by the AUIAC 2000 Organising Committee headed by Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Hamid Bugo. The members include senior government officials and representatives of Australian affiliated organisations in Sarawak.

Part of the interesting program for the three-day Convention are the Welcoming Reception, State Dinner and a Fellowship Night cum Street Party to be held at a prominent landmark in Kuching City. Other highlights include the Alumni gatherings for the individual Australian alumni to meet and interact, a tournament for golf enthusiasts, sight seeing tours and many more.

A registration fee of RM600 is charged for each delegate. Students are charged RM320 while accompanying persons are required to pay RM400. Due to the overwhelming turnout expected, delegates are advised to register early to avoid disappointment. For full details, please contact:
