DBKU Launching Series of Programme on Anti-Mosquito Campaigns

Eek...these mosquito larvae are alive! The involvement of parents, teachers and students are crucial in the overall success of these campaigns.
Mosquitoes are bad news. They carry all kinds of diseases with the incidence of Dengue Fever and Malaria topping the list in Sarawak.

In its efforts to curb this unhealthy development, DBKU recently launched the first of its series of anti-mosquitos campaigns for Kuching at the Sg Bedil, Kpg Lintang, Tanjung and Sinjan area. This series of campaigns will cover about 50 kampungs and residential areas under the purview of DBKU from June to November 2000.

In his speech read by his deputy Datu Dr Hatta Solhee, State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Hamid Bugo expressed his concerns about the high incidence of dengue fever cases in Sarawak with Kuching recording more than 20% of the 647 cases reported in 1999.

"Cleanliness is next to godliness. The voluntary involvement of the community in promoting the good habit of cleanliness is very much appreciated for it is nearly impossible for the governing authorities to clean all the residential areas in the city", he said.

Tan Sri Datuk Amar who is well known among the civil servants for his role in championing the importance of cleanliness for the State explained that one of the serious problems the local authorities have with the community is their nonchalant attitude about cleanliness and hygiene. "Somehow they have become used and immuned to their filthy environment and this is very dangerous", he added.

He praised DBKU and the communities involved for the efforts made in organising such campaigns.

BKU and other related government agencies will help to supply the tools and equipments for this purpose.

He also praised the in-volvement of voluntary organi-sations such as Actionetwork for their role in promoting the virtues of cleanliness to the public.

One of the objectives of the campaign is to form separate Action Groups to eliminate the breeding places of disease-bearing mosquitoes within their areas.

Other areas not covered by DBKU this year will be included in similar programmes for 2001.

Also present at the Launch were the Mayor of Kuching North, senior officials from several government departments, agencies and local councils, community leaders and the residents.
