Plan of action restructure tailors for development of women in Sarawak

The role of women in the mainstream of development is never more pronounced today. If we consider that half of the world's population is women, their contribution to the workforce and the economy of a country is indeed significant.

In Sarawak, women makes up about 49%* of the total population and they contribute to about 54.7%* of the total labour force in the State. Most are employed in the semi-skilled /low wage job categories.

However this is much lower compared to the 89.4% at national level.

Concerned that the development of women in Sarawak could be lagging behind, the Sarawak Women Council has taken the initiative to restructure the Plan of Action for Women Development in Sarawak. Taken from the National Plan of Action for Women's Development as a guide, the Sarawak Women Council of Sarawak has outlined the following recommendations based on several critical issues faced by the women of Sarawak.

Announced in September, 1999 by the Sarawak Women Council , the Plan of Action for Women Development in Sarawak has identified eleven (11) key areas that need to be seriously looked into:

1. Women Development Institutes

To strengthen and promote the integration and mobilsation of the development through the involvement and co-operations of NGOs and other women organisations

2. Women and Family

To highlight and capitalise on the women's role at the homefront - the role of a nurturer, an educator and a homemaker to create a happy and healthy home environment for a quality family.

3. Women and Health

To initiate programs to improve healthcare and increase accessibility to medical facilities for women in Sarawak.

4. Women and Education/Training

To provide greater and equal opportunities for education and self improvement training for women.

This include greater accessibility to higher institutes of learning, skill enhancement and training programs with special emphasis on the studies of science and technology among women.

5. Women and Economy/Occupation

To improve the working condition for women and increase their participation in the labour force.

This can be achieved through improved childcare facilities, the availability of flexi-time, access to equal career opportunities and counselling.

6. Women and the Law

Recommendations are made to ensure that women are fully aware of their legal rights.

7. Women and Power

To ensure that women has a voice in the making of policies or decisions that affects women.

There must be a women represented in positions of power at either national, state or village level.

8. Women and the Media

To work with the media to promote issues that are important for women. The media should be tapped as it play an important role in shaping the mindset of the masses.

9. Women and Religion

To ensure the rights of women are protected under the religious law of the State. This is especially relevant to issues of divorce, custody of children alimony and division of property

10. Women and Culture/Arts

To acknowledge women as a major contribution in the practice and preservation of arts and culture. Efforts will be made to encourage and promote the role of women in this area.

11. Women and Sports

To increase efforts to promote and enhance the role of women in the sporting arena. Previous sporting events have proven that women are a significant contributor to the development of sports in the country.
