UNIMAS signs MoU with Lions Nursing Home

UNIMAS MoU with Lions Nursing Home: a significant step towards achieving the goal of delivering health care to the community.
The University of Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) signed a Memoramdum of Understanding (MoU) with Lions Nursing Home in March to allow its medical students to visit the Home and learn to care for elderly people.

The start of the five-year programme was officiated in a simple signing ceremony held at UNIMAS and is part of the semester-long geron-tological nursing course offered in its faculty of Medicine and Health Science.

The MoU also fulfils the vision of the Ministry of Health which seeks to provide community-based health care to the Malaysian population.

Vice Chancellor for Research and Service, Professor Ghazally Ismail said that the care for the elderly is assuming greater importance as the global population ages. "Future health professional will need to have the required ezpertise to care effectively for the increasing number of elderly patients," he said. He went on to explain that there is a lot of difference in the care of the elders compared to that of the young.

"This warrants a specialised approach which firstly, to change the goal of therapy from merely curative to that of improving the quality of life and functionality. Secondly, the altered biological parameters in the aged demand a different core of knowledge of clinical bedside skills pharmacology and biochemistry", he added.

This five-year programme may be continued in the future if the objectives are being achieved.

The Lions" Nursing Home in Stampin is run by members of the Lions" Club. It cares for 45 inmates. Its staff of 24 provide for their daily needs in a serene and beautiful environment, in a spirit of dedication, love and respect.
