Importance of Marketing and Farmers" Organization's Marketing Role

by Lucy Ong, Agriculture Department Headquaters, Kuching

Commercial and competitive agricultural undertakings demand efficient marketing services.

Farmers" Organisation will play a leading role in this marketing function.

The setting up of this marketing centre, QFC, is one of the steps towards a more efficient marketing of the produces and products from our member farmers.

Objectives of QFC

The marketing centre (QFC) would become the central body to co-ordinate all products produced by the AFOs, SFO and Department of Agriculture.

Through this central body, the goods will be marketed through various distributing channels and network locally and internationally.

The QFC will be the marketing centre for the public to have access to our products and produces directly.

The centre would become a starting point for us to do trial marketing of any new product being produced.

Trademark QFC

The name QFC stands for Quality Food Centre.

The word "Q" from QFC will be the keyword for this trademark.

"Q" in itself denotes "quality" and it is also synonymous with motor vehicles" registration numbers in Sarawak.

Just as "KFC" denotes the ever popular Kentucky Fried Chicken, it is hoped that "QFC will be synonymous with quality food and food products of Sarawak farmers.

The reason why QFC was chosen as the name for this retail outlet is to create a mindset as well as positioning the business to the consumers that, whenever they think about QFC, they will think about QUALITY as well.

The slogan is "Say yes to Quality, shop at QFC".

Main Produces and Products of QFC

QFC's main focus and priority is to market and to sell the farmers" products and produces directly.

"QFC" believes that our farmer's products and produces have the potential to be commercialized with a proper marketing plan and set up.

We have three anchor products here; Pesticide Safe Vegetables, Quality Rice and Batang Ai Eco-Fish.

Pesticide Safe Vegetables is in demand today because people are becoming more health conscious.

The Department over the years have introduced various programmes to ensure that food crop such as vegetables sold in the markets are safe and wholesome for consumption.

The application of Integrated Pest Management (IPS) in crop management besides the constant monitoring of pesticide residue in vegetables are amongst the programmes implemented.

In order to provide consumers with a high degree of confidence on the 'safety" of vegetables, the Department of Agriculture introduced the Vegetables Certification Scheme (VCS).

Through this scheme, farmers would voluntarily produce "Pesticide Safe Vegetables". Presently, this scheme is extended to vegetable farmers using the net house, hydroponics and organic systems of vegetable cultivation.

Local quality rice is another anchor product. QFC would emphasize on the quality rice planted locally such as Bario rice and "beras Wai".

Batang Ai Eco fish is already a household name. Its has superior quality due to clean unpolluted environment that it is reared in. It is fed on high quality formulated feed and harvested using the " chill kill" method, thus producing the best quality fish.

The other major produces and products are: Food products from WEDA, speciality pepper products and fruits especially local fruits.
