36th World Skill Competition :
Pusat Latihan Pembangunan Belia Kuching Did It Again

Pusat Latihan Pembangunan Belia, Kuching (PLPB) of the Human Resource Deve-lopment and Quality Unit of the Chief Minister’s Department Sarawak added another feather to its cap when one of its trainees, Rosman Bin Bana was placed fourth in the recently concluded 36th World Skill Competition held in Seoul, South Korea.

Rosman, a 21 year old Melanau lad from Kampung Balan Hilir, Dalat achieved this feat in the Plumbing Trade. For his effort, he was awarded a Diploma of Excellence by the International Vocational Training Organization (IVTO) beside receiving a medal for being the best performer from the Malaysian contingent.

“The competition was very stiff as every participant is the best from each country,” said the shy youth of his experience in Seoul. Rosman who took up skills training in PLPB after completing his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination three years ago, hoped that other youths, especially the vocationally-inclined ones can emulate his example.

The 36th World Skill Competition which was held at COEX, Seoul City from 12 to 20 September 2001 saw a total of 35 countries with 661 participants taking part. Malaysia was represented by a contingent of 10, of whom, 2 were from PLPB.

The other Sarawakian, Mohd. Ali bin Mohidi from Kampung Semariang Batu, Kuching was placed 8th in the Joinery Trade. Collectively, for this outing, Malaysia managed to secure 4 Diplomas of Excellence inclusive of Rosman’s contribution.
