“Your Safety Comes First” Sarawak Road Safety Council

Looking after the safety of thousands of people is certainly a heavy responsibility for any one person or unit but that has been the task of the Sarawak Road Safety Council or Majlis Keselamatan Jalan Raya (MKJR) since 1967 - more than 35 years ago. Formed and registered on 27th September 1967, the Sarawak MKJR is a special unit within the Ministry of Infrastructure & Communications Sarawak.

It also serves as the MKJR Secretariat and reports to MKJR Malaysia, which is chaired by the Minister of Transport Malaysia.

There are two important boards under the Sarawak MKJR, i.e., the Sarawak MKJR chaired by the Minister of Infrastructure Development & Communi-cations, and the Sarawak Road Executive Board chaired by the Director of Sarawak Road Transport Department. At the Divisional level, the Road Safety Committee is chaired by the Resident of the respective divisions.

The Secretary who is also the Treasurer is responsible to administer and conduct various activities organized by the MKJR, consistent with Section 7 of the MKJR Constitution. The Secretary will report and refer to the Chairman on all activities and MKJR development. The main objectives of the Council are as follows:

1. To continuously upgrade the public’s consciousness in understanding road safety.

2. To stress to all road-users on the importance of polite driving and road safety.

3. To conduct Traffic Courses for school children on the importance of road safety.

4. To introduce Road Safety measures such as through Investigation and Serious Actions and disposing dangerous possibilities to road users.

5. To propose, advise and implement rightful Road and Traffic Laws into appointed bodies.

6. To get assistance from the public, government and other statutory bodies in collecting contributions for the success of the above purposes.

7. To award Gifts/ Appreciation in recognition to individuals who successfully implement road safety measures towards the prevention of road mishaps and accidents.

A program has been designed by the Council to help decrease accidents rate through these steps:

Education: Exposure and Media coverage to instill “Berhati-Hati di Jalan Raya” campaign among road users. This message is broadcasted on Radio, Television, Road-side Banners, Newspaper clippings, Minister’s message and so forth.

Enforcement: The Police and JPJ (Land & Transport Department) will conduct Ops Statik at frequent and strategic accident areas, and also at the State and Federal Highways.

Engineering:
To develop and construct better quality roads that are safer and more suitable for the traffic and road users.

All in all, the Council functions to minimize the rate of accidents and deaths on the road, conduct Road Safety courses and educate the public, campaign to remind the public about the importance of safety on the road, issue and implement Road Traffic Laws in the most effective ways, and also raise main issues, both directives and technical, involving effective road safety.

Safety of motorists and roadworthiness of vehicles are part of the Council's aims Accidents do happens, But a wreckage such as this can be avoided by exercising due diligence and care
