TIPS ON COMPUTER CLEANING (Part 1 of 2)

Routine Cleaning

Static electricity attracts dust to computer screens and keyboards collect airborne dirt. Computer parts should be cleaned when they start to look dirty.

YOU WILL NEED
  • Screen and keyboard wipes from computer shops
  • Or cotton buds, lint-free cloths, household spray cleaner, glass cleaner
  • Paintbrush
The computer should be unplugged and any floppy disks from the disk drives should be removed before starting to clean. The household cleaner should be tested on a small area that is not normally visible to ensure that it will not cause marks. Never use bleach or ammonia-based cleaners. Follow the manu-facturer's instructions when using specialist wipes, pads or cleaners. Do not spray or pour the cleaner directly onto the computer screen or keyboard but transfer it onto a cloth - avoiding over-wetting - then wipe the computer. Polish the cleaner off with a dry cloth.

Please make sure that no liquid enters any switches, controls, disk drives or cooling grills as this could cause damage.

THE KEYBOARD

Turn it upside-down and give it a good shake to encourage small particles to fall out. Turn it up the right way, and then use the paintbrush to clean between the keys, and a cotton bud dipped in household cleaner to clean the tops and sides of the keys. For the keyboard casing, transfer the cleaner onto a cloth and wipe it on; then polish off with a clean dry cloth.
