One of the most successful QCC groups
in the State is SEDC’s Be Q dot com. Having won numerous awards since its
involve-ment in local and regional QCC conventions in 1997, Be Q dot com is inspired
to continuously improve upon its project which is mainly on Poultry Farming.
It has recently won a 3-Star Gold Award at the National QCC Convention held in
Kuala Lumpur and prior to that it won the championship trophy in the State’s
QCC convention held in July 2003 at Pustaka Negeri Sarawak in the Management category.
Be Q dot com consists of a facilitator and an 8-member team. Formed in 1997, Be
Q dot com started off with a project concerning poultry. This is the mainstay
of the group’s project and comes under the Entrepreneur Development Division
of SEDC.
Be Q dot com has been involved in seven QCC projects since 1997 and five of these
projects have been supported with ‘innovations’, i.e. models.
There are altogether sixteen QCC groups in SEDC including her subsidiaries. And
each of these groups must initially compete ‘in-house’ before they can
compete with the other QCC teams from other organizations.
RAKAN Sarawak was told by team Be Q dot com about the steps taken to prepare them
for their presentation at a convention.
A leader will first have to be chosen amongst the team. Each of the leaders of
a QCC team is chosen on a rotation basis – every QCC project is headed by
a different leader to give each one a leadership experience in handling a project.
According to Puan Rubiah Hashim of the Quality Management Division, the Secretariat
of the QCC project, the rotation of a leader for each QCC project is to allow
them to gain experience which they otherwise will not have. And these leaders
are not always managerial officers. Rather, they are field officers who actually
go to the ground to be with the SEDC’s clients and beneficiaries. Problems
which arose when heading a QCC team are numerous.
They not only co-ordinate the team but also must be able to speak well, answer
any questions posed, explain any delays involving the project, how to solve internal
problems. In other words there are a lot of opportunity for Quality training by
virtue of being a leader in a QCC group.
Therefore becoming a leader is relatively new to them, but with the support of
the team as well as the backing of a strong management team, the leader will gain
confidence and be able to lead successfully.
Encik Ahmad Lippin was chosen as a leader of the 3rd QCC project in 1998 which
was about over-feeding of poultry. His experience has given him an invaluable
insight into the practice of leadership.
“The experience is most amazing. Being appointed a leader to head the team
is a heavy task. We know that we have to make this pro-ject a success. To do so
we have to go the extra mile, with the full support of the ma-nagement, col-leagues,
and members of the team, whom I must say are ever-ready to work together. I have
not had much experience when I joined the 3rd QCC project in 1998, but with the
close working relationship of the team, we managed to clinch a 1-star Gold Award.
I’d say that teamwork is extremely important and we have to put aside personal
differences and con-centrate on the project in hand. A lot of time and effort
is sacrificed. We have to work till late at night and at weekends and we are only
at home with our family for a short while during the duration of the project until
its completion.”
Encik Ali Haji Sidek is the leader of Be Q dot com’s latest project which
won the 3-Star Gold Award at the National Convention in Kuala Lumpur in September
2003. Encik Ali relates to RAKAN Sarawak about the successful co-operation given
by the team members throughout the plan-ning and presentation of the project.
“Even though this latest project is new to all of us, our past experience
has taught us a thing or two about what to avoid and where we can score points
compared to our previous projects. We have learnt much from previous mistakes.
Our team members worked very hard indeed so much so that the daily input of 8
hours simply feels about only a one-hour work. We got so engrossed in the project
that we lost track of time. The team worked full-steam ahead, putting aside personal
expectations and above all the sacrifices from family members are commendable.
And at work, our bosses gave us full support.”
The beneficiaries of the successful projects are the poultry farmers themselves.
As one of the team members explained, “…we want them to benefit as much
as possible from the success of the projects so that everybody’s effort will
not go to waste. They can use new technology and methodology to increase output
and also to meet our QCC group target. It’s not a matter of just gaining
awards but most impor-tantly we want to stress on continuity and establish a culture
of improvement in them. Perhaps the greatest sense of triumph is that the management
team has maintained the drive – even though the people have changed but the
drive towards victory has not faltered. The management is always pushing us to
do better all the time without which it is difficult for us to realize our goal
or reach where we are today. They are always driving us to be innovative and embrace
new ideas and improve upon existing ones.”
The same sentiment was echoed by Tuan Haji Jemat who is the person in charge of
compiling and binding all the papers for presentation to the panel of judges on
the day of the convention. “Needless to say, no papers no convention! So,
the role of the ‘compiler’ is pretty significant in the whole team.
Time is plentiful, but the compilation of the papers for the project must be in
tandem with the flow of the project until the very last day when the convention
is up and the books must be ready on time.”
Compared to other agencies, perhaps only SEDC has a QCC team which practices continuity,
not only on paper but also at ground level. “Our farmers practices the farming
methods based on the documented project of the QCC - audited on the ground, check
what is happening at the farms and feedback to the management to be taken up by
the QCC team.”
