Biotechnology from the Islamic Perspective
Participants from various discipline attended the Seminar
An international seminar on biotechnology from the Islamic perspective was held in Kuching recently.

To enhance its understanding and acceptability among the Islamic community in Malaysia and the region, several working papers were presented by speakers from Egypt, India, Pakistan, and Malaysia.

Organised by Institut Kefahaman Islam Malaysia (IKIM), Sarawak Development Institute, and MARDI, the two-day seminar was officiated by the Chief Minister YAB Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud and officially closed by Tan Sri Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid, the Chairman of IKIM.

In his opening remarks, Pehin Sri Taib said that “Sarawak welcomes foreign scientists and technologists to carry out studies and explore the potential of the existing biodiversity resources in our forests. The State is willing to share the information acquired from the results of the researches. Sarawak’s abundant natural resources will be a major source of exciting discoveries in biotechnology. The government encourages efforts to advance research and development in biotechnology.”

He added that Malaysia has a lot to offer to the biotechnology industry as the country is one of the 12 nations in the world with mega-diverse bioresources. “Our flora is estimated to contain about 12,500 species of flowering plants, our marine ecosystems is rich in a variety of life forms while the coral community is considered to be the most diverse in the world. To achieve Malaysia’s vision to be the halal center in this region, the government needs to equip the nation with excellent R&D infrastructures such as highly technological-based laboratories, ICT, innovative and creative human resource to support the production of biotechnological halal products.”
