Birthday Celebration for the Head of State

TYT acknowledging to the crowd
Boom! Boom!… goes the guns for 17 heart stopping times. I watched, with trepidation, the windows on the buildings across the street vibrate with the force of the gun salutes. The early morning of 13 September 2003 started with light drizzles, making it a perfectly cool day to celebrate the special occasion of the 82nd birthday of the Head of State, His Excellency Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhammad Salahuddin.

It was a sight to behold at Padang Merdeka that morning with 101 contingents adding bright splashes of colors on the open field. These contingents taking part in the grand parade comprised of about 2,000 people from va-rious government departments, agen-cies, statutory bo-dies, associations and educational institutions.

Anticipation reached its height upon the arrival of His Excellency who was welcomed at the grandstand by the Chief Minister, YAB Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, state ministers and other senior government officials. The police band struck up “Ibu Pertiwiku” and the 3rd Royal Artillery Regiment fired the 17-gun salute. The birthday celebration has officially begun.

His Excellency, accompanied by the Commander of the First Division Infantry, Lieutenant-General Datuk Mohd Azumi Mohamed, inspected a full guard-of-honor mounted by 107 officers from the 13th Battalion Royal Malay Regiment. This was followed by an inspection of the contingents by the Head of State together with the Chief Minister who later gave a speech for the special occasion.

During his speech, YAB Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud said, “We are thankful to be able to celebrate the Head of State’s birthday in peace and harmony. The success of the state is due to the stability of government, security provided by the police and army, and peace of the people who have love for the state.” The Chief Minister ended his speech by wishing the Head of State continued health and prosperity.

Later, three cheers of “Dirgahayu” led by the Chief Minister, was made to the Head of State before His Excellency released 82 pigeons and balloons to the delights of crowds gathered to witness the activities. The joyous celebration finally ended with gymnastic performances and traditional cultural dances from students, the Ministry of Social Development & Urbanisation and military personnel of the 3rd Infantry Brigade.
