Tan Sri Dr. George Chan pressing a button to declare the month-long Merdeka & Ruby Jubilee celebration officially closed

After a month-long celebration of the 46th year of Malaysia’s Merdeka! and the Ruby Jubilee Celebration of Sarawak’s inde-pendence in Malaysia, Miri was the host of the closing ceremony on 16 September 2003.

Deputy Chief Minister, YB Tan Sri Datuk Amar George Chan Hong Nam, representing the Chief Minister spoke to a spectacular crowd who came to witness the event.

“Independence,” he said, “has enabled the people of Sarawak to decide their own destiny and free to do what they want within the parameters of the law, and as such,” he reiterated, “there was a need for the people to protect and treasure independence at all costs.”

He reminded Sarawakians not to take the bounty of independence for granted as it is very precious and should always be cherished.

He added that the State’s past leaders had made the right decision in joining Sabah and the Federation of Malaya to form Malaysia that freed the people from the clutches of colonialism.

As the present generation looks back on the national leaders’ struggle to build a prosperous nation, Dr. Chan said the people must also resolve to do the same for their children and the next generation.

At the same time he also praised the State government especially under the able leadership of Pehin Sri Dr. Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud that had achieved many successes politically and economically.

Among those present to witness the occasion were the Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government, Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui, Lambir State Assemblyman, Aidan Wing, Senadin State Assemblyman Lee Kim Shin, Miri Resident, Liaw Soon Eng, and Miri Municipal Council Chairman, Dato Wee Han Wen.
