WORDSMITH'S TOOLBOX

Being able to use the right words for the right occasion, writing or saying them correctly in the proper context...it's a skill that anyone aspiring to be a "better communicator" must learn to acquire and constantly, improve on. As the line in that popular song, "Words", by the Bee Gees says: "It's only words, and words are all I have to take your heart away...", the right words are the key to bridging that communication gap and bringing people closer and working well with each other. So, from our wordsmith's toolbox, here are some tips on how we can make "words work for us"....

Thwarting Abrasive Colleagues

To deal with those who sometimes irritate or infuriate you, follow these guidelines:

Gain control by asserting yourself calmly and firmly with a comment such as, "You disrupt my thoughts when you barge in and start shouting about a problem. If you want my help, let's discuss it calmly." Note: This may work like a splash of cold water in the face and settle those who donxt realize they're behaving badly. "

Ask the other person point-blank how he or she would feel if you demanded that things go your way or no way. Reason: Some abrasives are so self-centered they canxt see the other side of an issue until you point it out.

Stress how the behavior will affect productivity. Inconsiderate people often just need reminding that theyxre part of a bigger picture that wonxt get painted without equal effort from everyone.

Consider ignoring the behavior and getting on with your work. Hint: Try to put disruptive incidents in perspective by ranking them on a 1-10 scale. You may find that few rate more than a two or three.

Inform your manager if the problem seriously affects your work or threatens to ruin a project. Donxt whine about it. Just offer evidence ? where and when the problem occurred.
