Civil Servants’ work attitude will certainly matter

The subject of evaluation and promotion of civil servants has always been an important issue. The recent statement of Tan Sri Samsudin Osman, Chief Secretary to the Government, regarding the need for competency tests is a welcome move as Sarawak civil servants march towards a knowledge-based economy.

At present the Federal Government is looking into appropriate and effective ways of implementing the procedure. “We are looking at it as a necessity in our march towards the creation of a knowledge-based economy and we need a compatible and skilled public service “ Tan Sri Samsudin said recently.

The evaluation will cover not only skills and knowledge but also, and more importantly, work attitude of civil servants.

According to Tan Sri Samsuddin, civil servants may undergo competency tests to evaluate their work knowledge and attitude in preparation for the gradual transition into a knowledge-based economy. He also said that the administration is looking into appropriate and effective ways of imple-menting the procedure.

As the evaluation done by the heads of departments may not be sufficient, this new type of evaluation may prove to be more effective. This is also a way of enhancing the work quality in the entire civil service and at the same time promote pride and loyalty among the civil servants.

“We have all the reasons to work harder and remain faithful to the Government” Tan Sri Samsuddin said.
