There is no limit to what we can achieve even if we start from humble beginnings. This sentiment of the Chief Minister of Sarawak, YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr.) Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud, aptly described the great success of the recent grand celebration in Sibu of the 44th National Day Closing Ceremony on 16 September 2001. There was an enormous amount of effort and team spirit displayed by the various Committees and Sub-Committees, comprising mainly of officials and staff from the State Civil Service, in ensuring that the activities and programmes for the major event were organised smoothly.

The Resident of Sibu, YBhg Tuan Haji Bujang Mohidin bin Haji Jol, felt privileged and honored that Sibu was chosen as the host for the event. Preparations and coordination for the celebration began in earnest in April 2001 with Sibu Town undergoing a transformation into a clean and picturesque garden town with new road networks, street lighting, mini parks, lovely gardens and landscaping. He added that the State Secretary of Sarawak and Chairman of the Working Committee at the State level, YB Datuk Haji Abdul Aziz bin Haji Husain, gave his full support towards the organisation of this prestigious event.

YBhg Datu Dr. Haji Hatta Solhee, Deputy State Secretary I and Vice-Chairman of the Working Committee, praised the cooperative and team spirit shown by the State Civil Service and people involved including the Ministers. He also remarked that the event was well organised, executed and implemented as planned.

The logistics involved for the event roped in several government departments and agencies to plan and arrange for aspects like accommodation, transportation, protocol, security and secretariat operation to name a few. YBhg Tuan Haji Bujang Mohidin stated that a lot of teamwork, commitment and dedication were demonstrated by all concerned – from the Federal to State levels, top to ground levels including schools, associations and those who were directly or indirectly involved in the pre and post event.

YBhg Tuan Bujang Mohidin bin Haji Jol, resident of Sibu, expresses his gratitude to all officers and departments/agencies for their valuable contributions and assistance towards a grand and successful celebration.

Government agencies such as JKR (Jabatan Kerja Raya), SESCO (Sarawak Electricity Supply Corporation) and SMC (Sibu Municipal Council) handled the overall decoration and equipment required for the event. According to the Divisional Engineer of JKR Sibu, Ir. Robert Tiong Kuok Ming, the architects, electricians and building maintenance staff of JKR Sibu worked together to provide the billboards, buntings, performance stage, VIP sheds, Royal box and so forth.

The well-lit Royal box for the Royal couple and VVIPs is designed and set up by JKR Sibu.

SESCO Sibu arranged for the colorful and decorative lighting including the blinking strobe lights for the Protocol roads, Sibu Gateway and Town Square. They also ensured that enough power supply is available for the celebration. Mr. Chan Hua Chiang, Regional Manager of SESCO Sibu, was very happy with the cooperation extended by his staff and contractors as well as the assistance rendered by the government departments in coordinating the event.

For the part of SMC, Mr. Stephen Tsai Jit Jui, Secretary of SMC, expressed his great satisfaction on the team effort and hard work displayed by his staff in cleaning and beautifying Sibu Town for the celebration. The shop owners sought by SMC to repaint their shophouses readily complied. SMC was also responsible for the beautiful floral decorations and fireworks of the event.

Response by the public at the celebration was overwhelming and an unexpected huge crowd turned out for the Closing Ceremony of the month-long 44th National Day Celebration at Sibu Town Square (Dataran Bandar Sibu). However, it is the hope of the Resident of Sibu that the people will continue to appreciate the transformation of Sibu Town and contribute in taking care of the facilities, amenities, recreation parks and gardens developed by the State government for them and their future generations.
