Gawai Dayak Open House 2003 - Promotes Unity and a Boost for the State Tourism

It’s the month of June again and for the indigenous people of Sarawak, its a time to put aside their problems and join the merriment of Gawai - traditionally a thanksgiving festival to celebrate the bountiful padi harvest and hope for a better harvest in the coming year.

Today, Gawai Dayak Festival has become the whole community celebration - along with other celebrations like Hari Raya AidilFitri, Chinese New Year, Christmas etc. It is a time to strengthen family ties and foster close friendships.

In a true spirit of Gawai Dayak, a combined Open House was held on June 1, 2003 at the State Civic Centre. Hosted by the State Dayak leaders, the open house was attended guests of honour, His Excellency, Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Muhammad Salahuddin and Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Thousands thronged the Civic Centre to wish the leaders “Happy Gawai. Among the Dayak leaders at he open house were Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Alfred Jabu ak Numpang, Social Development and Urbanisation Minister, Dato Sri James Jemut Masing, Environment and Public Health Minister, Datuk William Mawan and National Unity and Community Development Deputy Minister, Dr. Tiki Lafe.. Other state ministers were also there to wish their fellow Dayak ministers a happy Gawai.Gawai Dayak Open House 2003 - one of the six national fesivals listed in Malaysia’s calendar of events was celebrated in a show of unity and multiracial harmony when thousands of well wishers turned out to join in the Open House held at the Sibu Town Square recently.

The special event which took place on 14 June, 2003 is proof that the multiethnic people of the county has become matured, tolerant and helpful with one another. This was said by the Minister of Tourism, Datuk Paduka Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir at the opening ceremony of the Open House.

The presence of the Deputy Yang Di Pertuan Agong, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin and his cosort, Deputy Raja Permaisuri Agong Nur Zahirah was a great honour for the state as it was the first time that Deputy YDPA attended such an open hosue ever since it started in 2000.

The colourful event was also attended by the Yang Dipertua Negeri Sarawak Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Muhammad Salahuddin and his wife, Deputy Chief Minister, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Alfred Jabu, Social Deve-lopment and Ur-banisation Minister Dato James Jemut Masing, Infrastructure and Communications Minister Datuk Wong Soon Koh , heads of departments, community leaders and about 50,000 members of the public.

“The Malaysia Open House concept is unique and has become a vital ingredient to foster closer friendship, respect and tolerance among the country’s multiracial society’, said Abdul Kadir.

True to the spirit of the unique Malaysian Open House, the public were treated to many variety of local and traditional food as well as cultural and concert performances by local artistes.
