A second workshop on Balanced Scorecard was facilitated by Mr. Stewart Key on 23 and 24 July 2001 at the State complex, Simpang Tiga Kuching. Another group of 30 senior officials from the State Civil Service attended the two-day workshop. Mr. Stewart Key is from the Executive Solutions and Development International, Perth, Western Australia.

The two-day workshop is an awareness workshop with the objectives of making participants:

• understand completely how the Balanced Scorecard methodology was conceived;

• understand how to develop a scorecard for their department, division or organisation by interpreting their strategic plan; and

• have materials at their fingertips to train others within their organisation in the Balanced Scorecard approach;

There are altogether 8 modules presented during the workshop. A typical example of the application of the Balanced Scorecard is illustrated during the workshop by a case study of four Australian organisations namely, Metso Minerals; Central TAFE; Department of Agriculture and, Water Corporation. For each of these corpo-rations, the application of the Balanced Scorecard has helped to:

• develop a leaner organisation

• strengthen the human resources of the organisation

• re-engineer systems and processes

• motivate staff to self-train, and

• help everyone become focused on strategy

Prof. Dr. Haji Abdillah Suffian Abdul Rahim, the Managing Director of Centre for Modern Management (CMM) presented certificates of attendance to the participants at the end of the two-day workshop. Also present was Mr. Michael Sim, the Managing Director of ESD International, Perth, Western Australia.
