Low tide…walking all the way up to land with
welcoming party |
As the new chief of the police force in Sarawak, Dato’
Talib Jamal wants to get close to the people running the stations in various districts
in the state and he did this when he went on a tour to some of these stations.
Getting to know his officers in the various districts will enable him to carry
on his tasks in a much efficient manner besides assuring the community that their
safety is as much guaranteed with their co-operation with the police force.
Making his round by sea in the powerful police outboard PA36, Commissioner Talib
headed to police stations at Teluk Melano, Tanjung Manis, Sarikei, Kabong, and
Sebuyau to see for himself the situation at these outposts. Leaving Telaga Air,
near Kuching on Monday, Commissioner Talib and his troop dropped by at Teluk Melano’s
police pondok which is manned by Corporal Timothy Jony and Lance Corporal Juli
bin Aziz.
At this most western tip of Sarawak, Commissioner Talib met up with Lundu police
chief, ASP Abang Abdillah bin Abang Majid. There they discussed some of the problems
encountered with Indonesian plantation workers who ventured all the way to Sematan,
coastal town nearby. Abang Abdillah later announced that Teluk Melano registered
a zero crime index and that the villagers were cooperative in ensuring a crime-free
village which housed a school and population of about 350 from around 50 families,
most of whom are farmers and fishermen.
The next morning Commissioner Talib launched Ops Banteras. The operation covered
the areas from Tanjung Datu Mukah with assistance from the Police Air Wing. After
the operation, PA36 headed towards Tanjung Manis where the commissioner was briefed
on the role of PUSAKA before visiting the police station there. Next on the list
was Daro where the police chief of the District, ASP Poniman Margiman who gave
the Commissioner a briefing on is
manpower requirement and the facilities lacking in his district. He reported that
since January to May this year, the district which included Matu and Daro recorded
a crime index of 11 cases, the majority of which were stolen outboard engines
and some heavy machinery parts.

Sarikei was next on the agenda, where a Malam Mesra was organized in which the
Commissioner gave away prizes to the winners of the recent sports tournament held
there. The next day, Commissioner Talib was given a briefing at the Sarikei police
headquarters. Sarikei police chief, Superintendent Nicholas Sebastian gave an
overview of all the balais and police pondoks
in the district. A number of these balais and pondoks were in a state of disrepair.
Nicholas said changes must be made to some balais which were in need of repair
and some which should be relocated as the population has changed. Giving some
immediate solutions on the spot, Commissioner Talib agreed that all police chiefs
should at least provide decent pondoks for their men who were working in rural
areas. Back on the boat again, this time the group proceeded Kabong and was met
on arrival Saratok Police Chief, DSP Abang Abdillah Abang Aerowaini. He briefed
Commissioner Talib on the crime index stating that the first five months of this
year, there were 25 cases while for the whole of last year, there were 71 cases.
Last year there were persons arrested for various crimes as opposed to 12 this
year. From Kabong, PA36 headed for the last coastal town on the list, Sebuyau
.
Commissioner Talib later remarked that he was touched by the rousing welcome from
the local people there as almost all of them turned up at the jetty to meet the
Commissioner and strolled the short distance with him to the police station. Sebuyau,
which comes under the jurisdiction of Simunjan District has a population of about
9,000, most of whom are fishermen and small-scale farmers. Simunjan Police Chief,
ASP Wilfred Chin proudly announced a zero crime rate in Sebuyau. Commissioner
Talib, who attended a briefing with the community leaders representing the Malay,
Chinese and Dayaks expressed his thanks for their warm welcome and cooperation
in successfully making Sebuyau a crime-free area. He added that he was not surprised
at the peace and tranquillity of the place as the people and the police worked
well together. After the Sebuyau station, the tired but fulfilled troop headed
back to base.
