Sarawak's Schools To Benefit From RM150 Million Allocations For ICT Development

Student-Teacher... teachers as well as students will be able to reap the benefits of IT
The government has set aside a sum of RM150 million to enable the Ministry of Education to provide schools, especially in rural Sarawak with Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

The State Director of Education, Datu Dr. Adi Badiozaman Tuah recently stated that the ICT project which has been approved by the Education Ministry has so far equipped 1,255 primary schools and 159secondary schools, excluding Technical Secondary Schools with the latest technological equipment
– 7,900 units of laptops, 588 units of PCs, over six thousand units of LCD projectors, and an equal number of screens and amplifiers at a cost of RM35.5
million.

A networking system dubbed “School Networking” has been launched and it is hoped that by year 2005 this will perpetuate quicker access of knowledge and information gathering by students and teachers from the World Wide Web.

Malaysia is today a major player in the development of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in the region.

With investment-friendly policies to attract world-class ICT companies to do on developing new media as tools in the service of richer curricula, enhanced pedagogies, more effective organisational structures in schools, stronger links between schools and society, and the empowerment of disenfranchised learners.

The concept of ICT in education, as seen by the Ministry of Education, includes systems that enable information gathering, management, manipulation, access, and communication in various forms. The Ministry believes that properly designed and implemented computing and communications have the
potential to revolutionise education and improve learning as profoundly as information technology has transformed medicine, finance, manufacturing, and numerous other sectors of society.
