Since 1980 the Serian District Council
(SDC) has extended its library services to 16 villages within its jurisdiction
with the principal aim of providing the people with information by supplying these
libraries with newspapers, magazines and other government publications.
Each of these village libraries is looked after by an attendant/librarian appointed
by the SDC.
Two of these village libraries won the First and Second prizes in a Landscaping
Competition organised by the state government in 2001. Desa Menaul and Desa Triboh
Village libraries within the Serian District came first and second respectively.
Desa Menaul Village Library
The library services of the SDC was extended to Kampong Jawa Menaul at Jalan
Ensengei, Serian in 1999 with a request from the JKKK headed by Encik Paiman
bin Ratem.
The present attendant, Puan Noorila binti Naroodin was employed to look after
the library after the former attendant, Puan Warti binti Sukor resigned to take
up another job in May 2000.
Tuan Haji Teriman Suto, a Councillor of the SDC and Hajah Salbiah Emon kindly
donated a piece of Mixed Zone Land and together with a fund of RM50,000 from
the National Library of Malaysia through the Ministry of Environment and Public
Health (MEPH) set up the Desa
Menaul Village Library.
This new building replaced the building offered for use temporarily by Encik
Sukor bin Desan.

Negara Malaysia through the MEPH.

Ak. Igang and Chairman of the JKKK, Encik Dhanabalan and Encik Sikah Ak. Gelai

Since then, the library services have benefited the people especially the pupils
of nearby schools.
Part of the Balai Raya or community hall in the village was used as the Reading
Room until 1998 when the portion was needed for the extension and renovation.
In April 1998, Encik Miriga Ak. Bajah of the village offered part of his dwelling
for use as a Reading Room until the new Perpustakaan Desa building was completed.
