Brown bag Seminar On Applying Competencies in HR System

A brown bag seminar entitled “Understanding and Applying Competencies in HR System” was held at the Conference room, 2nd Floor Wisma Bapa Malaysia on the 20th February, 2003.

Organised by the Human Resource Development, Chief Minister’s Department and Sarawak Development Institute, the 1-hour thought-provoking talk attracted about 70 participants from both the private and public sectors.

Presented by Tuan Haji Sapiee Hanapi of KOMAG USA (M) Sdn, the talk among other things touched on topics such as managing competition which included performance management, career growth, managing employees, managing change in job content and much more. He also touched briefly on the importance of competencies rather than intelli-gence in HRD and how a person may be motivated by the social motives of achievements, affiliation and the power of influence.

The concept of the Brown Bag Seminar was first brought up by the Training & Organisational Development Committee, SDI under the chairmanship of Dr. Razali Abon. This short seminar or discussion, stemmed from the idea of sharing knowledge, expertise and information on current issues of interests with the audience. The ultimate aim of such a seminar is not only to create a learning and sharing culture among the participants but more importantly stimulate their intellectual faculties - the creative and analytical aspects of the human mind.

This is the 9th monthly brown bag seminar organised since June 2003. Besides Dr. Razali Abon, director of HRD, Chief Minister’s Department, several top management officials of the State Civil Service were also present at the seminar. The seminar has been registering more participants and hopefully more will turn up for the next one in February entitled “Bullying at the Workplace”.
