What the First Resident Says: This is an honour as well as a big challenge for me being selected as the 1st Resident of Betong. The appointment will place a heavy and onerous responsibilities on me as well as the other members of the team. The thrust of the government programme and activities initially towards the ins-tallation of the administrative system and ma-chineries to han-dle the various issues and cha-llenges , to deal with the imme-diate needs of the civil service such as the provision of adequate hous-ing and office space for the various govern-ment departments and agencies. I am confident that with the coopera-tion and full support of the stake-holders and all concerned we should be able to resolve the teething problems.

Vision for Betong

To accelerate the socio-economic development in Betong in order to be in the same league as the other advanced Divisions like Miri, Kuching and Sibu.

Hoping to Achieve during his term…

En Romie has many things in mind which he hopes to accomplish during his term as Resident…"There are many things that I hope to achieve and put in place. Among them are:

WALK ABOUT… Datuk Patinggi Taib visiting the exhibition booths during the launching. About 48 exhibitors, comprising of government departments, statutory bodies and NGO took part in the exhibition KICK-OFF… Tan Sri Jabu starting-off the VIP football match between the 'Betong' team and the State Secretary's team. The SS team won 3-1

1. For the public service to increase their productivity and the provision of an effective and efficient machineries (people and organisa-tions) to deliver and provide better services for the people

2. Reduction of bureaucratic process and procedures through decentra-lization of administration in order to be more responsive to handling 032002 issues and future changes

3. The smooth, efficient and effective implementation and completion (hopefully 100%) of the 8th Malaysia Plan projects (infra-structure, recrea-tional, socio-economic, land development, etc.) which will benefit the peo-ple immediately by raising their standard of living and providing more em-ployment oppor-tunities

Priority Areas

The priority areas that need immediate attention are:

a. Infrastructure development (roads and bridges), utilities (water and electricity supplies) and,

b. Land and agricultural development with particular focus on large oil palm estate deve-lopment, fisheries and rural based small and medium industries (SMI).
