Education

Issue on School Dropouts is a Major Concern
"Infuse a Different Approach to Education" CM Advises

"We need to intensify the role of informal education and we must widen the scope of our study on the present educational system. We must also look into having an education system that can infuse enthusiasm, curiousity and discipline among the students especially in the early years." These were some of the key messages that the Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud imparted as he officiated at the "Workshop on School Dropouts in Sarawak" held recently in Santubong.

The workshop highlighted several key issues about the school dropouts in Sarawak. The paper presentations and group discussions delved on issues and concerns on school dropouts in the State as well as research findings on the problem. There were more than 60 participants who attended the workshop which was organised by the State Planning Unit of the Chief Minister's Department in collaboration with the Sarawak Development Institute (SDI).

Background

The role of education in the social and economic development of nations is an acknowledged fact.

The State Secretary Datuk Amar Aziz Hj Husain presents a set of the workshop papers to the Chief Minister
Even at its basic level, education helps reduce poverty and inequality by increasing the productivity of labour, improving health and by equipping people with skills they need to participate fully in the economy. As a developing nation, knowledge-based workers will be the driving force towards realising Malaysia's goal of becoming an industrialised economy by the year 2020.

For this reason , education has always been accorded high priority by the govern-ment as evident by the substantial allocation for the development of the sector in all the five-year development plans.

Given the nature and the socio-economic implications of thee problem, it is imperative that a more in-depth assessment of situation be undertaken to enable the State to institute the necessary follow-up actions.

Although several studies have been undertaken on human resource and manpower development, the focus was on the over-all development of human resource.

"We must have an education system that can infuse enthusiasm, curiosity and discipline among our students" says the Chief Minister
The dropouts problem was discussed in all these studies but treatment of the subject has been largely confined to mere situational analyses of the issue.

Therefore, the State Planning Unit has commissioned a study on School Dropouts to the Bureau of Consultancy and Innovation, Uni-versity Kebangsaan Malaysia.

The study is now in the Draft Final Stage. At this phase, the in-volvement of and contribution by all stakeholders both from public and private sector as well as NGOs are essential to en-hance the quality of the study output and its effective-ness as a planning document .

It is for this purpose that this workshop is conducted.

Objectives of the Workshop :

1. To discuss issues and concerns on school dropouts in the State

2. To share the research findings on school dropouts; and

3. To recommend strategies/ approaches to address such issues and problems
