THE  BLIND  WOMAN  AND  THE  TURTLE
by Justine Fuk

A long time ago there lived an old blind woman.  She had a son named Kumbir who had just married.  His wife was proud and did not take care of Kumbir's mother.  She even urged her husband to build a new house for themselves.  Being obedient to his wife Kumbir built one.  When the house was ready they moved into it and left the old blind woman alone without any food.

The new house was on the other bank of the river.  When they had been staying there for about a week, it started to rain, and as a result the river began to flood.  Kumbir's wife hoped that her old mother-in-law would be drowned.

Having pity on her the turtle agreed

Feeling hungry and thirsty the old blind woman called for her son.  But she received no reply.  So, without waiting any longer, she walked around the house but she could not feel anything edible because nothing was left for her.  She went down from the house and walked aimlessly hoping to meet somebody.  She walked and walked until she reached the bank of the river.  There a big turtle emerged from the water and asked her where she was going.  The old woman related her story and ended by saying that she was looking for her son.  Having pity on her the turtle agreed carry the woman on its back to her son.  When they came near the house, the turtle asked the woman to get off and said to her:  "Before you go we must make promise."  The old woman agreed.  "From now on," the turtle continued, "your race cannot kill us or disturb our tribe.  If you do, you will be cursed, for I have saved you from danger.  Go now and tell your son about it."  Having thanked the turtle, the woman set off to the house.

When she reached her son's house, the son and his wife filled with surprise.  They began to feel sorry for what they had done.  The old woman forgave them.  She started to tell what had happened to her and the promise that had been made.  Her son told all the people about the incident, and so even today there are many people who do not want to kill or eat turtles.
