Once upon a time there lived a handsome young man called Buayoi who had just got married to a beautiful young girl called Masundu, from another village. This girl left her younger brother and her old mother at home. There were many young girls who fell in love with Buayoi in his village, but none of them was chosen to be his wife, so these girls were jealous of Masundu, and they decided together to try to get Buayoi to divorce his wife. Before long rumours reached Buoy that his wife had secret meetings with another man whenever he went out hunting. Without any hesitation he quietly went into the forest and made a coffin that would exactly fit Masundu's body. He could have killed Masundu there and then, but he feared that Masundu's warrior brother would take revenge, and his brother-in-law was twice his size. Early the next morning he condemned his wife without any further investigation and took her to a lonely place to be buried alive. Imagine how frightened Masundu was when she heard this. It happened that Masundu had a cock which she never parted with, so she took it along and bury her on top of a hill. That evening, after burying his wife, he went home. Sadly he sat down on the ladder and then heard his mother talking to a woman at the back of the house. "please tell Masundu not to bother about rumours, because I have just found out that the girls started all this out of jealousy," the woman said to his mother. Of course Masundu's burial was kept a secret by Buayoi. Thus he learned the truth. But it was too late to regret what he had done. Masundu would have died by then even if he were go back and dig up her coffin.
The news came to Buayoi's ears that Masundu was with her family in her village. He knew at once that his wife had been saved from her tomb. He would have fled to her for since he learned the truth he had never felt happy and regetted what he had done. But he was aware that her brother would never forgive him. At last he decided to go and take Masundu back even at the risk of being killed by her brother, for he could not face the world with his burning love, without his wife being with him. He apologised for what he had done to Masundu and would offer anything they asked for as long as he could take Masundu back with him. Then her brother stood up and said: " I would only let my sister go on one condition: unless you bring all the people of your village and all the happiness here, you'll not have her back." No sooner had Buayoi clapped his hands then all of a sudden birds were heard around the house. Outside the house the murmuring of people was heard. Masundu then asked her husband to go back first and that she would follow him soon. When she left, Masundu took with her half of the people and of the happiness to Buayoi's village. It is said that when Buayoi reached home Masundu was there waiting at the door for him. He was surprised to see his house decorated and great feast ready to start, all organised by Masundu. Nobody can describe how happy and excited he was by the way Masundu received him home. From that day on they always lived happily together.
