The youth pulled out the splinter from the lion's teeth

THEN LION IS a bad animal. It is very fierce, and it 
bites people. There was once a house and all the animals belonging to the people of the house had been eaten by  
the lion. There was a time when they had no pounded rice 
to eat, so one of the women said, "Let us go and pound  
some rice." 

        "Oh, I am afraid of the lion.  It's nearly the time for it to appear,"said her friend. 

         "So? If we do not go out to pound the rice, we will have nothing to eat.  If it comes, I'll throw my pounding stick at its mouth.  "So they went to pound rice. 

         Along came the lion.  It was hungry and looking for something to eat.  Then it came to their house and wanted to bite a person.  One of the pounding women saw it and threw her pounding stick and it went straight into the lion's mouth.  The stick broke itno splinters and one stuck between its teeth.   The lion ran away and went home to its lair.  It could not eat. 

           The lion became thinner and thinner as it stayed there.  It wanted to eat but could not.  It was very mch bothered byt the splinter that was stuck between its teeth.  About a month later it said, "I am going to ask someone to pull out this splinter from my teeth." 

            There was a youth who was out hunting.   He met the lion who was looking for someone to pull out the splinter from its teeth.  The youth was aftaid, but the lion said, "Don't be afraid.  I am not going to bite you.  I am looking for someone to pull out this splinter."   The youth drew near and as the lion opened its mouth, the youth saw the splinter between its teeth. 

             The pounding stick was made from hard wood.  "Well, now I know you are telling the truth, I'll pull it out.  What will happen when it is out?  Will you bite me?" 

              "No," said the lion. 

              The youth pulled out the splinter from the lion's teeth.  When it came out the lion said to him.  "In the past, if anyone broke wind, or laughed, a lion came and bit him.  Now if you hear me roar, just say in your language "I am descendant of Kamantil", - and I will not eat you.  I will only eat animals." 

               If it were not for the splinter, the lion would be a very, very fierce creature today.
