THE MOUSEDEER AND THE GIANT
BAAL NU PALANUK AM LALANDOU
He carved the giant's feet, too

"LET'S ALL meet tomorrow," said the mousedeer.

"When shall we meet?" asked the pig and the other animals, the large deer and the barking deer.

When it was light they all met.  "What would you like to do now?"  asked the mousedeer.

"We don't know.  You're the one who is clever.  We are not."

"Well, in my opinion, we should go and fish tomorrow,"  said the mousedeer.

"That's a good idea.  We'll go and fish.  I, too, long for the taste of fish,"  said the pig.

When the day arrived they all gathered and went to the landing place.  They got into the boat, untied the rope and paddled away.  They paddled the boat and came to the place where they were going to build their shelter.  They tied the boat up, and built their shelter to sleep in.  When they had finished building the shelter they discussed what they were going to do next - to go fishing or to go hunting.

"I want to go fishing, "said the large deer.

"So do I, "said the big pig.

They collected the net and the basket and off they went.  They got into the boat, untied it, and paddled away to deep waters.  They unfolded the net and threw it into the water.  Later, they pulled it in, and it was filled with fish.  "We've got a good haul.  Let's go home, " said the pig.

Off they went, paddling their boat and finally coming to the landing place.  They put the fish on the shore.  They cleaned the fish and smoked them, and then they went to sleep.

When it was daylight they said, "Let's go fishing again.

"Agreed, but who will stay here? "asked the barking deer.

"I will, " said the large deer.

Off they went to the boat.  They untied it and went fishing.

Down came the rain, and the sun was misty.  Then a giant appeared, asking for the smoked fish from the large deer.

"I shan't give you any; I want it myself.  My friends will be mad at me later, " said the large deer.

"No, they won't " said the giant.  "If you don't give me some I'll hit you."

But the large deer would not give any.  "Aren't you going to give me any?"  said the giant and hit him.  The large deer fainted and the giant took his place and ate up the smoked fish.  When he had finished eating the giant left.

The deer's friends came home.  When they arrived there was no smoked fish left.

"Where's our smoked fish?" they asked.

"They were eaten by the giant," answered the deer.

"Didin't you stop him? " they asked.

"I tried, " said the deer, " and he said, 'If you don't give it to me I'll hit you.'  I didn't want to give him any, but he kept on and on asking and then hit me.  It hurt and then I fainted."

"I'll be the one to stay behind tomorrow," said the mousedeer.  "You'll see if I don't tie him up."

"You're only a little one," said the large deer.  "Look, how I got on with my big body."

"I'll stay behind, " insisted the mousedeer.  So they slept.

At daylight the next day the other animals went off.  They reached the boat and got into it, and went paddling along until they came to the deeper part of the river and started fishing.

Whoosh came the rain.  The giant appeared.  "Give me some of your smoked fish."  The mousedeer pretended not to hear, picked up his carving and started to carve - making a binding.

"What are you doing?" asked the giant, curiously.

"I am carving my handle," said the mousedeer.

"Do some for me," said the giant.

"Stretch out your hands," said the mousedeer.

"Sure," said the giant, and then stretched out his hands.

The mousedeer started to carve a binding on his hands.

"Don't speak.  It won't work if you do, " said the mousedeer.

When the mousedeer had finished carving the giant's hands, he carved the giant's feet, too.  When his feet were finished the mousedeer said, "Get up now."  The giant tried to rise but he could not move.  "Now, you sit down there.  Are you strong enough to undo these bindings?" asked the mousedeer.

The mousedeer's friends came back.  They looked around and could not see the mousedeer - he had hidden himself.  The pig said, "The mousedeer has gone.  Most probably he has been eaten by the giant."

The mousedeer came out and said,  "Now look at the giant.  I have bound him.  You did not believe I could, did you?"  The pig looked and saw the giant writhing in the bonds made by the mousedeer.

"My goodness, now we can see him.  Lt's kill him, " they said.

They all got themselves sticks and beat the giant, until he died.  Then they threw him away.  After they had dealt with the giant the mousedeer said,  "We'll share out the fish tomorrow. "  So they slept.

At daylight they divided the fish between the pigs, the barking deer and the other animals.  they all had a considerable amount, but the mousedeer only had a little.

"Oh, so that's how it is.  I've only got a small share.  Let's sleep here once more and we will fish again tomorrow, "said the mousedeer.  So they slept again.

The mousedeer got up, collected some fish scales and put them on his friends' eyes.  When he had finished putting them he shouted, "Get up!"  The animals got up and fell into water, making a big splash as they did, and they were all drowned.

The mousedeer collected all the fish that they had smoked, and carried it into the boat.  then he went home.

"Where are the others?" asked the pigs' wives.

"Oh, they are way behind," said the cunning animal.
