THE SKY AND THE EARTH YOUTH
LAKOU NU AMBULOK NU LIMBOWON AM AMBULOK NU TANA' TU
They borrowed fishtraps and went to collect water
THERE WAS a youth from the sky, andd there was a youth from the earth.  The two of them were arguing over a girl - a girl from the sun.

"I'll have her," said the Earth youth.

"No, I will," said the Sky-youth.

They told her father.  "Oh, if you wish to win her you must go and fetch some water in a fishtrap.  If the water stays in the fishtrap for either one of you, he is the one who can have my daughter," said the father of the Sun-girl.

So they borrowed fishtraps and went to collect water.  The Earth-youth dipped his trap into the water, but it would not stay in the trap.  Then the Sky-youth had an idea.  He took his fishtrap and looked ofr a kind of eel.  He collected some of the sticky stuff from the eel and spread it over the fishtrap, stopping the holes.

"Now I have stopped the holes with the eel's sticky stuff," said the Sky-youth.  Then he tried the trap and dipped it into the water.  The water stayed in the trap just as if it were a bamboo dipper.  Then he filled it with water and carried it to the house of the Sun-girl's father, and showed it to him.

"Oh," he said, "this chap is so clever he can even carry water in a fishtrap and the water stays."  Really, he had been testing them out because he did not want his daughter to marry either one of them.  But the Sky-youth was very clever and fhad collected the sticky stuff from the eel and wound it round the fishtrap so that the water stayed in it.

Then the Sky-youth talked to the father of the Sun-girl.  The old man could not object.  That was what he had said about his child - whoever could make the water stay in the fishtrap, he was the one who could marry his daughter.

Now it is the Sky-youth who has married the Sun-girl.  The Earth-youth has no wife.
